This past spring the group also completed an international tour that included performances in Europe and Australia.
Challenge and change are the themes underlying the 39-year career of the revered female African-American a cappella ensemble, which was formed as a quartet in 1973 at a workshop at the D.C. Black Repertory Theater Company in Washington by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon. In the course of creating its adventurous and diverse mixture of blues, African, jazz, gospel and R&B music, with excursions into symphonic and dance theater, 23 vocalists have passed through the group. The current line-up comprises Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Aisha Kahlil, and Shirley Childress, an American Sign Language interpreter who has been incorporated into their live performances since 1981. One of the group’s core members, Ysaye Barnwell left the group at the end of May/2013 after 34 years to pursue her own solo endeavors.
SWEET HONEY is also featuring some special guests for select dates. Their engagement at the Music Hall in Tarrytown will include bassist Parker McAllister, who is featured on the group’s current CD. They will feature guest vocalist Navasha Daya Hill for the shows in Troy and Port Washington.
