Belmopan—The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the visit of the music group Sweet Honey in the Rock (SHIR) in an Arts Envoy program to Belize from August 27 – 31, 2014. The Arts Envoy Program is a longstanding outreach program at the U.S. Department of State. The Arts Envoy program shares the best of the U.S. arts community with the world to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration and to demonstrate shared values and aspirations. American arts professionals– including performing artists, visual artists, poets, playwrights, theatrical and film directors, curators, and others– travel overseas to conduct workshops, give performances, and mentor young people. Programs seek to connect with international publics who might not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with American arts professionals.

SHIR (http://sweethoneyintherock.org/) is world renowned and an American grammy award winning music group. SHIR is an all-woman, African American a cappella ensemble, and is rooted in African American history and culture. The ensemble educates, entertains and empowers its audience and community through the dynamic vehicles of a cappella singing and American Sign Language interpretation for the Deaf and hearing impaired. Sweet Honey’s audience and community comes from diverse backgrounds and cultures throughout the United States and around the world, and includes people of all ages, economic, education, social backgrounds, political persuasions, religious affiliations, sexual preferences and differing abilities.

This is the first time SHIR has agreed to participate in an Arts Envoy, and the U.S. Embassy is very excited that they have chosen Belize. While SHIR visits Belize they will be joined by the Garifuna Collective for three concerts and two interactive workshops facilitated by the Embassy in Belize City on August 27 at 7:00 pm at the Bliss, in Dangriga on August 28 at the Sacred

Heart Church, and in Seine Bight/Placencia on August 30 at the Seine Bight Community Center at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are free to the public, but must be acquired in advance of the events through the U.S. Embassy or other local Arts Envoy partners such as the Radisson Hotel, Robert’s Grove, BTB, the Bliss, Seine Bight Community Center, BTIA Placencia, and BTL.

The U.S. Embassy invites the press to cover all of the events associated with the Arts Envoy program in Belize. Please email BelmopanPA@state.gov to inquire further.
