SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK has been invited by the South African Embassy to be a featured performer at the National Memorial Service for Nelson Mandela.
SWEET HONEY is part of an impressive list of guest performers that will be contributing to the memorial service on Wednesday, December 11, at 11 am EST.
The talented list also includes the legendary Jessye Norman, Peter Yarrow & Friends, the Morgan State Choir, Pacific Boy Choir, WPAS Children of the Gospel, WNC Cathedral Choir, the Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Jazz Quartet and the South African Community Choir. The Memorial service will start at 11:00 AM (EST), and is being presented by the South African Embassy in partnership with the Washington National Cathedral.
Vice President Joe Biden and the Presiding Bishop & Primate of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, will attend, as will many other elected representatives.
Sweet Honey’s line up with comprise Louise Robinson, Carol Maillard, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Shirley Childress, (ASL Interpreter) and guest vocalists Tulani Kinard (a former member of Sweet Honey) and Navasha Daya Hill. As it does during times of national celebration and loss, the Cathedral offers a sacred place to mourn the loss of this international leader in the fight for equality and human rights. A voice for justice domestically and around the world, the Cathedral stands with South Africans in mourning their loss and remembering the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
